Karas Residence
Callawassie Island, South Carolina
Erin P. Salzer, Landscape Design for Living is pleased to announce the production and future airing of a Backyard Habitats episode on Animal Planet, and is now designated as an official wildlife habitat by the National Wildlife Federation. The half-hour show builds on NWF's ongoing Backyard Wildlife Habitat™ program, which for more than 30 years has inspired people to make a home for wildlife right outside the back door.
This project was implemented on Callawassie Island, which recently became the 15th certified Community Wildlife Habitat (CWH) in the nation, and the first in South Carolina. It is at the home of well-known oil painter Michael Karas and his wife Fern. Unlike the well-known butterfly and bird gardens that have become quite popular, this project was designed to attract more diverse wildlife, such as the grey fox, black racer snake, and woodpecker. The careful use of sustainable and native plants, materials, and techniques makes this garden a low-maintenance pleasure for both the clients and surrounding wildlife. |
